The fun never stops!!! It has been a great 3 months using and abusing my 64 bit machine. Installed now I have:

Suse 9.2 (32 bit)
Suse 9.2 (64 bit)
FC4 (64 bit)
Centos 4 (64 bit)

I am still very happy with Suse 9.2 and my system runs great!

More speed comparaions later!

My fun in 64 bit land is increasing all the time!!! Now on my new machine I have:

SUSE 9.2 (64-bit)
SUSE 9.2 (32-bit)
CentOS 4 (64-bit)

I also got a FC3 DVD today and I will be installing it soon.

One interesting benchmark I have so far is "oggenc". Encoding a 8Mb wav file on SUSE 9.2 32-bit took 42.9 seconds with a data rate of 11.7. But on SUSE 9.2 64-bit, on the same machine, takes only 28.8 seconds with a data rate of 17.5! Remember that is tha same machine, same hardware, the only difference is the OS, 32 bit or 64 bit. :)

The latest news is that I got a new system... an Athlon 64... :) I am now installing 64 bit versions of Linux. I have tried Mandriva LE 2005 and I am installing Suse 9.2 64 bit as I write this.

My last entry was called "Memory Madness" in which I ranted about the memory requirements for Fedora Core 3. A very diligent user (Hi Firdaus) emailed me saying, "Those are the requirements to run fedora in those modes. Certainly not the requirement to run the installer itself." Sticking to my guns I replied "I think you are wrong. I have a 64MB machine here and I can't run the GUI installer, it insists on putting me into text mode." But I did agree to check again... and guess what... I was wrong!!! :(

I have a 64MB laptop, so I put the FC3 CD in and guess what, the GUI installer came up.

So the FC3 memory figures I quoted last time are for running the system and not for installation... I still have some things to say about the memory usage for a running system, but at the moment I shall slink away with my tail between my legs . :)

(Our should I say my fin as Penguins don't have tails!) :D
